China is taking its PR campaign to the Big Apple. A commercial promoting the national image of China is shown in Times Square in New York, the United States on Monday, January 17, 2011. The promo, featuring several celebrities including basketball star Yao Ming, astronaut Yang Liwei, composer Tan Dun, pianist Lang Lang, and the Father of Hybrid Rice, Yuan Longping, will be aired in the U.S. during Chinese President Hu Jintao’s visit to the country from January 18 to 21.
According to Wang Zhongwei, vice minister of the State Council Information Office a 17 minute video is also presented by the China’s State Council Information Office which will run until February 14th. With China’s traditional red as the theme color, the video aims to present Americans with a multi-dimensional and vivid image of Chinese people to strengthen the international community’s understanding of China and promote the prosperity, peaceful and harmonious image of the country.
This promo piece, making its first appearance in the US, features multiple facets of China including its politics, economy, society, scientific research, education, environment and ethnic groups. The issuance of the two promos will be run in a purely commercial manner, though the government has provided subsidies for the shooting and editing of the video.
