Warmest Chinese New Year Greetings!
The year 2008 marked God’s 16th year of our ministry. Over the past 16 years God has never failed to amaze us about how much He loves the lost and how many more souls are ripe for His harvest. We give glory to God and give thanks to you for supporting us continuously and faithfully. At this time of the year all Chinese are celebrating the coming of the New Year of the Ox, the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work.
Rolf is home since January 9th for the Chinese New Year/semester break. It has been a whirlwind of activities making the time go by much too quickly before he must return on February 11th. As short as his stay is the rewarding work God has given him and his love for the students he teaches makes leaving home and family somewhat easier.
His first week home we spent in Kankakee staying with three of our grandchildren while our son, Anthony and daughter-in-law Louise went off to California to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. It was a fun week for us. We experienced our newly licensed granddaughter, Sydney driving to school for the first time. Thank goodness snow and cold weather closed the school for the rest of the week taking away for us that concern for her safety! The cold snowy weather didn’t keep us in though because their afternoon paper route still needed to be done snow or no snow.. Brrr! And then we were privileged to see our 8 year old grandson, Sean make his first basket in his first basketball game. What a treat!
After our week there we took off for 10 days to a warmer climate. We drove to Gainesville Florida to spend some time visiting with Sherri’s brother Art and sister-in-law Debbie. While we were there we also had the opportunity to visit with a number of friends and most importantly just to spend some time together away from the “normal” routine.
In spite of the heightened security with unannounced visits to his classrooms and to his apartment by school administration officials Rolf has been able to lead 26 students and 1 teacher to the Lord! He follows up and disciples a couple of them at a time in his apartment. He has no office at school so his apartment also serves as his office making it not unusual to have students come by. They bring the Bibles he has given them concealed in a paper bag or some kind of sack and come with lots of questions.
Once a week Rolf with some of the Chinese teachers teach classes at a satellite school about an hour off the main campus. The school takes them and brings them back by bus. One of the teachers always sits by Rolf which started a relationship. One day he asked Rolf what the Holy Grail was. Rolf doesn’t know where that question came from but “whatever” it was the opener to a spiritual conversation which lead eventually to this teacher making a decision for Christ and praying with Rolf — all this on the bus rides! Rolf gave him a Bible and now that school is on break he keeps in touch with Rolf by email. Please pray for him and the 26 students that they would continue to grow in Him and hunger for His Word.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6.
We appreciate all your prayers for Rolf’s safety and for wisdom and discernment in what he does (and says) and ask that you please continue to pray. Pray, too, for Sherri as she takes care of things at home and at church. It is so exciting to be a part of what God is doing in China. Thank you for joining us on this great adventure with your love, support and prayers.
